About Us
Retro Remakes is the number one resource on the net for all news on the Retro Remakes scene.
You’d have never guessed that by our name, right?
We’ve been around a while, gone through many changes, baby. Heck, this is the second complete change of ownership of the site (although not a new change, I’m afraid all the old admin gang are still around). Originally the site was started by [JJ] way back in the mists of time, after that - Steve Phelps (The Toker) took it over. Since the passing of Steve a few years back, RR has been in the hands of the current team of remakers, posters and administrators.
Our aim, for those new to the place, is simple. We want to help promote the hard work, time and dedication of the band of people who remember, recall and preserve gaming history by dragging it up to date for the modern systems. Or in some cases, for other retro systems. To provide a second home for game devs and remake enthusiasts alike and to supply a showcase where you can view, download and play remakes. Where authors can post their work and you, the public can come on in, comment and interact.
We’ve been featured in magazines from PC Gamer, PC Zone, GamesTM to RetroGamer, had mentions on The Guardian Games Blog, GameSetWatch and more.
Our pet love, aside from Remakes, is promoting accessibility in gaming wherever we can. Having worked closely in the past with Barrie Ellis of the IGDA Accessibility Sig and OneSwitch.org.uk on two competitions - our site contributors and forumites have managed to create one of the most accessible games (and playable!) outside of academia and created over 50 One Switch games for gamers to play.
Retro Remakes is a strictly freeware based site. We believe in the rights of the original authors and copyright holders to still receive credit and all rights to their creations, and that it’s no-ones place to profit from the original authors hard work except for the original authors. To this end, we politely ask anyone who is thinking of advertising their shareware remake on the forum, site or showcase in anyway to please refrain or risk a banning.
The Site
The site itself comes in a few segments:
The Main Page: This is where we post news, articles and things and stuff remakes related.
The Forum: Where works in progress and completed remakes are posted first, and we sit back and relax and talk rubbish at each other.
IRC Chatroom: Where we go to relax away from the terrors of the outside world, and generally - don’t really talk remakes much.
The Showcase: Our new replacement for the game list of old. Currently still in beta and being worked on, but it’s gradually filling up with remakes galore for you to browse and download.
Copyright Issues?
If you’re the copyright holder or original author of any of the works you see featured on this site and you’d like us to remove it from our listings. Get in touch, we don’t bite and we’re not some down and dirty warez site. Even better, why not come on in, pull up a chair and join our forum. There’s a few original authors as members and even some folks who work in the industry today.
RR funding, advertisements and donations.
Retro Remakes is a not for profit site and any advertisement revenue or donations are put towards keeping us online on a monthly basis. Basic server costs come in at just under £100 a month and we haven’t come close to breaking even in around 5 years now. We can’t see that changing soon and unfortunately we can’t afford to sustain RR out of our own pockets anymore without some assistance.
If you’d like to help support RR and keep the site online then there are a number of ways you can do so:
if you’d like to help us out then feel free to donate via the link in the sidebar via the ever safe and secure medium of Paypal.
Forum members can choose the “forum subscribers” option from their User CP offering a number of regular payments or one off donations to the RR Help The Server fund.
Indie game/language developers - if you’d like to advertise on RR then get in touch. We have ad slots in the sidebar and 1,000’s of page views every single day. If you’re interested (and I’m sorry but we can’t accept advertisements for shareware remakes) in advertising your title or website then drop us a line for advertising rates. You can contact us via oddbob AT merseyremakes DOT co DOT uk for details.
