Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas people!
Thank you for yet another year of remaking and retro game goodness. This site would not be what it is without the continued input and support of all our visitors .
On behalf of the administration team here at Retroremakes, let me wish you all a very merry Christmas.
A Very Magic Christmas (Magic Knight)
Pen Pen Xmas Olympics
Monty’s Christmas Special
Trap Xmas Demo
Xmas Card From Ian Price
There is plenty more of our fine retro goodness there for the festive plucking so feel free to peruse the forums between kissing under the mistletoe and drinking the wine.
Mini Reminder
Just a reminder that the dungeon themed mini competition is nearing an end.
23.59 GMT on Sunday the 23rd of December 2007 is when the doors slam shut.
Submit your entries to the forum thread before that time and it will be included in the judging.
Anything submitted after will not and Mr Rules will be round to leave you a “Christmas Present” under your desk.
Mr Rules aside, please continue with your entries, even if you miss the deadline as there are more and more great looking entries popping up in the forum thread and it would be a shame for some of them not to see the light of day.
Rip Off
Rip Off…. The very name calls images of council tax protests, a hike in oil prices, beer at £3 a pint and a first class stamp topping 30p a pop. It’s enough to drive an Englishman to distraction.
Fortunatly we are an international group of beings and I’m sure that Sokurah, hailing from the chilly climate of Denmark*, had absolutly none of this in mind when tackling the latest addition to his catalogue.
Rip Off was first touted to us back in October, the remake of a 1980 Cinematronics arcade game (more info than you could possibly need here) and is a faithful reproduction, loaded with options to get it as close to the original as you possibly can without building you a cabinet and charging you to play.
It’s easy to pick up and play and, if you don’t mind sharing personal space - and a keyboard - with a close friend, is a cracking co-op 2 player game to boot.

It would be wrong to start comparing this it to Asteroids, in the same way that it would be wrong comparing Moon Cresta and Galaxians, but I think it’s safe to say that fans of the shooty rock type game are gonna love this. I could never get my head around it myself, so I’m pleasantly surprised how nice this plays.
You can see the WIP log here and download the full remake here.
And Sokurah, you get 10 brownie points for delivering on last Friday’s promise so damn quickly :)
* I hope - I can only check these things SO far you know!
Weekly Round Up - 21/12/07
Why is December so damn short? I mean, February I can cope with, September and June are OK too, as short months go, but December? There just ain’t enough time!
The remakes are coming in thick and fast so let’s cut to the quick and have a look at FatSeagal’s Wheelie. Literally minutes after pushing out a working version of The Wild Bunch he’s back with his plans to remake the Speccy stunty bikey vroooooomy game. As with Wild Bunch, he’s looking to do a fairly faithful remake and it’s already getting a bit of interest….
Dinomaster’s Overworld Zero is further on in development, a remake of a Systemshock 2 minigame, it wouldn’t look too out of place in the mini comp!
We’ve had an updated build from Oddbob of his mad action G-Force, seriously, box of frogs doesn’t cover it - try it NOW.
And from looking back, lets take a quick look forwards to what could be an interesting week for players as the mini comp comes to an end. Mr Rules has set up a new thread for the entries to make it easier to find and play them so go grab anything you want and have a blast at everyone elses expense!
And if that’s not enough then I’m reliably informed that, as tradition dictates, a seasonal treat is on it’s way from Scottige, I couldn’t POSSIBLY give you any more information on this, but you should keep half an eye both on the forum itself and the Auld Games site. I’m shivering just thinking about it…..
For now though, have a particularly geeky Christmas!
Archon Evolution Returns
The web site disappeared many moons ago and many people asked about its whereabouts with dismay and for a long time it was thought that this game had gone for good.
The people who had managed to keep hold of a copy were the lucky ones for a while, but then their beta expired and they joined the throngs of the disheartened.
But now you can put on your party hats and rejoice as this game has returned with a new non-expiring beta. Also thanks to some encouragement in the forum, the author has decided to continue with development as well as giving us back the version we had before. Huzzah!
If you are the sort of person who likes to have a fiddle, and aren’t we all, the current version that is available to download has had the graphics and sounds unprotected so you can edit them and change them to your heart’s content.
Said to be around 70% finished the game is still more than complete enough to be able to have a full game of Archon against a friend.
The author seems to be struggling with the choice of continuing with the current version or starting again from scratch using all the knowledge he has acquired during the development. Hindsight can be a wonderful thing and there are always things you wish you did differently, but I hope he can resist the temptation to throw out the current version, it is very almost there.
Weekly Round Up - 14/12/07
What with Christmas parties, pressie buying, obligatory trips to distant relatives, Christmas TV, Guitar Hero III and all the other things life has thrown at people this last couple of weeks, it’s amazing that there is any action going on in a community that relies on people taking far too much time out of their lives than is good for them just so they can remake games that other people loved to play.
But action there be.
Sokurah, for instance, has been tweaking away at ‘Rip Off’ and has promised a beta imminently (and we’ll not take no for an answer here!).
Alpha goodness, on the other hand, comes in the shape of the first playable version of the more than interesting looking ‘Pac-man with a twist’, Kometbomb’s squiggly take on the theme which, I must say, is already pleasantly fun to play, with the promise of more twists to come. There is also a nice little video of the yellow one in action that, though it doesn’t do the ‘twist’ side of the game too many favours, will give you an idea of why you should be trying it instead of just watching it!

Of course, there’s the mini comp being worked on too, don’t forget Sunday 23rd December is the closing date for entries.
You know, we really ought get real lives………
