Great Scott! Where did this come from? Like a bolt from the blue a PM landed in my special box informing me that this remake of Starquake is completed, and it’s not one of the ones we have previously reported in our hallowed html.

Starquake

I see you shiver in antici……..pation!

Evert van Oosten has pulled a blinder, spending the last five months slaving in Dark Basic Pro chiselling this game from a block of solid code. In a very retro move the graphics have been redone in DPaint with an Amiga emulator. Keeping it Old Skool!

At last the curse of Starquake has been broken and we have a finished remake. Yay! Hopefully this will not be the last too, as there are a couple of others in the works… Well there were last time I checked and I hope that still applies.

Unfortunately there is no website for the game (as yet, anyhow) so here is a direct link to the file. Enjoy.

Uhm, it plays fine enough, but looks a bit…basic.
    - that’s not a dealbreaker though…however, it seems unfinished? if you press ESC while playing, the game exits and returns you to your desktop.
    Is that right?

    …but it plays fine. :)

On Vista32, it says I need DirectX 9-something or later.

Hmm, the engine is superb but sadly it offers nothing over playing it on an emulator. Come on chaps, get a graphics artist and a musician and really spruce it up.

Have you used the DX update tool?

What is DBPro using these days? I know it’s a lot more recent than the first v9.0c release.

anyone know what the keys are? I moved out the movement, but to pick up?

    Found this on Internets:

“programs that were written before Vista [...] refused to run because it requires DirectX 9 and DirectX 0 isn’t sufficient. For some reason it trims the DirectX 10 to a zero. Telling it to run in compatibility mode fixes that one”

Will try next time on Vista32.

It is good to finally get a version of Starquake that’s playable… this version, judging by the teleport codes, is based on an emulation of the Atari XL version.

I had the Direct X error as well, asking for “d3dx9_31.dll”. A quick search on google later and I downloaded it. You can put this DLL file into the same directory as the starquake.exe and it works fine.

The keys seem to be the cursor keys to move when on a hopper, when walking use up cursor for pickup/drop, down cursor for platforms, and the space bar to fire.

Plus, if you need them, here are the teleporter codes for this version:

SALCO, TRAID, ATARI, MINIM, DELTA, KERNX, COSEC, ARTIC, QUARK, CRASH, ARGON, PENTA, Z.A.P., WHOLE, SECON.

Can someone please tell me if this game has a trainer version or what would i have to do to get infinite lives or energy?

  14. Evert on April 17th, 2008 7:05 pm

for cheating try typing “gimme” in the teleporter and see what happens.
you may also try “ghost” for a little gimmic. (b.t.w. “wiebo” does something to)
and yes it is based on the atari version. I own the original tape and a matching atari to play it on :)

forgot this one “loser” gives you 99 lives to play with
