Well the waiting is finally over… Ovine have released their latest game (their second FreeScape remake) which is non other than Driller. The game came out on a myriad of formats (ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore Amiga, IBM PC) so if you haven’t heard of it then you must have been living in a dark and damp cave for the last couple of decades.

I just learnt something new about the original too… According to wikipedia it was called Space Station Oblivion on it’s US release. Fancy that! If you ask me it doesn’t have quite the same succinct ring to it, but hey oh.

Why on Mitral are you reading this waffle anyway? A lot of you have been chewing at the bit and foaming at the mouth waiting to get hold of it, so go download it already!

Be sure to come back when you have released some gas and tell us all about it.

Speak your brains

D’oh! Now you tell me. I feel such a fool :(

Gorrit, anyway (Driller, not the poo’s) - will have a gander after a ciggy and brew. GASPING here.

Noice! I was always a great fan of the atmosphere that the original game had. This version has managed to capture that, and more!

For true authenticity, I’ll need to play it on a 486 so that I can recreate the framerate that I had on my C64. :)

Just run a few 3d packages in the background, that should sort the framerate out proper ;)

    JOYGASM!

Thank you so much fellers. That’s my productivity ruined for a week or so.

…but I seriously hope I don’t have to complete that Tron section or I will seriously break something. >:(

Otherwise, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this remake. The visuals are nice, the gameplay’s nice (though there seems to be issues with the laser - some objects just don’t trigger like they should)

15/16 drills and I just have to figure out how to drop the forcefield in Ochre to plant No 16. I remember not finishing the game 10 years ago either, so if I give up, it’s even more a blast from the past. :P

You will find i added a range on the lazer. so on most objects you would have to get closer to them than the original.

The TRON level doesn’t have to be completed - but if you do complete all the secret rooms it does give you access to the 10th secret room !
