Happy New Year

December 31, 2006 · Filed Under Retro Remakes News · Comment

In case I’m not around later, I’d like to wish you all a very happy new year for 2007 from all the folks at Retro Remakes.

And whilst I’m here, I suppose I better post some remakes news.

Highway Encounter

Bankie has updated Highway Encounter with a few tweaks and the ability to use different texture sets. Stuffage tweaked includes the turn rate and firing speed. So go grab.

Alley Cat 2 now has its own webpage, and I’ve still not got round to trying this one yet so you’ll have to fill in your own critique here and pretend I said it. Apologies all round, I normally try and play all the games that come through these doors but this has slipped my mind until now. I’ll have a gander after I’ve posted this.

Mick Farrows Hunchback remake has had a very nice update. Lots of fun for all those who like avoiding getting a spike up the backside.

Drewsters Casio Invaders is an interesting remake of Space Invaders as featured on the Casio MG-880 Calculator. A noble and admirable project. Very nice it is too.

Smila has put out his Competition 2006 magazine for your reading pleasure. I’m pretending there isn’t a picture of me inside it as I type.

Righty, thats all for now. Brief again I know - but we’ll be shifting over to the new format this week with a bit of luck, so expect a change of pace.

I remember now!

See, its amazing what a poor nights sleep does for the memory. I actually remembered the other thing I was meant to post about yesterday!

Nenad Unnamed Shooter

Nenad of Counterclockwise fame has dropped a few screenies of his latest project in the forum to sex up your eyes. Currently described as, and I quote:

“Started this recently, still working on game mechanics. Primary idea was to make something like Deatchase, minus the actual chase/shooting part, taking place on hilly terrain for a bit more challenge and variety. Basically a high-speed avoid’em up with something to collect for score and couple of powerups… This proven to lack the gameplay juice so eventually I’ll be turning it into straightforward shmup”

Ok, technically, it may not end up a remake, but its so lovely that I figured a link was in order. And here is the link. Although I must confess I’d be very happy with a 3d Deathchase remake that looked like that.

Berzerker Bots by Phil Stroff is now up to 2.0 and available for both the Mac & PC. In case you’ve been under a rock and not noticed that this is a 3d Berzerk Remake, then err… just reread this sentence again and we’ll all be happy. There we go, I feel better for remembering now!

Kufi’s excellent Tempest clone will receive its latest revision in the new year, so you’ve all got something to look forward to. If you’ve not played it yet… why not?

Tim of Independant Gaming snuck his head through our curtains last night to let us know that the Fenix remake of Streets Of Rage, last featured on these pages a hecka while back is due for a release this week. Keep an eye on Bombergames for launch. And finally for today, a trip to Mr Dictionary for Lemmings on the DS

Things We Missed

Its always quite bizarre given how much trawling of the internets we’ve done over the past 5 years that occasionally things slip through the remakes net and somehow don’t make it to our pages…especially when its a remake of one of my favourite games of all time.

There’s a lot of interesting content over on Haroldos Programming Page, a mix of old DOS remakes, Sega Megadrive/Genesis projects and the holy grail for me - a gameboy colour remake of Keystone Capers.

Happy Days indeed.

The Thinker has finished his remake of Alleycat - entitled (wait for it…) Alley Cat 2. I’ve not had chance to grab it yet due to the joys of Xmas stuff to do, but I’ll be taking a look later. In the meantime, I’ll let you be my eyes and ears and have a gander at it.

For all you Linux folks, you’ll be glad to know that Goody from Coptron games is now available in lubberly Linux for your enjoyment.

I’m sure there was some other stuff I was meant to post about today, but as its slipped my mind I’ll leave it there for now. Hope you all had a good and safe Christmas and I’ll see you soon.

Jet Set Willy Online

December 26, 2006 · Filed Under Retro Remakes News · Comment

Its here!

So, it all turned into a race against time, so we’re running late…so, there’s this Jet Set Willy game right - and its online. Yuss, multiplayer Jet Set Willy… it shouldn’t exist, but it does…and y’know, its about time you lot started playing it…

The collaboration between Ovine, Scottige,Smila and Oddbob with a little help from Rodentia is a xmas gift from us, Retro Remakes and those nice chaps over at Way Of The Rodent.

There’s rucks of games tucked into the package for you to enjoy, from seeing who can lay their hands on a Golden Willy, our favourite - Willy Tag, the deathmatch staple of Capture The Flag and many many more.

Stu’s done a wonderful job on the coding, Scott and Smila fantastic new room design, and Andy H, Achay and MadHippo some excellent extra willies. There’s a server thread here where you can sort out who’s playing where and when if you fancy jumping into a game, and the Rodent page is here with info.

File mirror here

So, enjoy and lets see some pics of your Willy.

Merry Xmas

Ladies, Gentlefolks and inbetween! All the daft muppets at Retro Remakes would like to wish you the merriest Christmas possible, and hope that all is safe and well in your worlds over this chilly Xmas period.

To tide you through your turkey, we’ve got a grab bag of remakes for you to lay your mits upon.

Everyone knows that glowing vectors are the sexiest things on the planet, so with this in mind - I’m very glad to drop a nod in the direction of X-Outs rather fantabulous Gravitar meets Thrust in a street fight game Gravitron. Inspired by Weibo’s excellent Thrust Deluxe, its a brutal little blaster, but hecka fun.

Still on a gravity tip, Les Bird has just released Levitar 3d - the third episode. All 3 episodes are available for you to grab in one fine zip with new weapons, new locations and new stuff and things. So, blast away your xmas in style.

We don’t see nearly enough in the way of text adventures these days in Remakes land, so its a big, big, big huzzah to Harvey who stuck his head into our forum (not literally) to announce a remake of his very own Quest For The Golden Eggcup. There’s a zip in the forum thread for you to try as well as instructions on how to get it up and running. For those who don’t remember the original, I won’t spoil anything but needless to say, the game is a bit special.

Ah, good old Geekay, he’s got more festive spirit than most of us and he’s going to share his load amongst you all. I’m still trying to work out wether Grottomania is a festive remake of Automania or some filthy top shelf simulator. Given its the season of goodwill to all men, women, and ladymen I think its pretty safe to assume the former.

And on that fine note, I fear I must dance myself senseless…no wait, make a cup of tea, thats the one. Sorry, I got carried away there.

MERRY XMAS EVERYBODY!

I did it, I got through without one Santa’s sack joke! Woohoo!

Tis the season

…for ice lollies, tra la la etc… pffft.

Good morning world! Some news for you this foggy, chilly, damp and grey morning.

Santa Ian Price has surprised everyone with an announcement of the remake he was destined to make (don’t try saying that whilst drunk), yes, for all you Amstrad CPC lovers - he’s announced a remake of one of the Amstrads earliest classics Sorcery+. If you’ve had the misfortune of playing Sorcery on a different format, then evidently you’re not going to know quite what you’re missing out on with the minimal screens and distinct lack of beautiful pixel work on all the other itterations of the game.

The CPC version is, of course, the one true master, unless you were playing it on a green screen then the gorgeous colours were lost on you.

Ians making me moist in anticipation.

Endurion The Red Nosed Reindeer (that just doesn’t work at all does it? Sorry Endurion!) has once again updated his Crillion remake Hitblock with loads of new game elements and a ruck more levels. So, if you like your puzzlers puzzly, then off ye go.

They call him Steve, because in all likelihood, thats his name and he’s nipped onto the forum to tell us about a load of old Gollops that he’s updated. (I’ve been waiting to use that line for ages, sorry!) Now named Nuclear Graveyard to fill you with a bit of seasonal cheer, it is of course an update on his Laser Squad remake in three dimensions. Funky stuff.

When not setting fire to passers by with his unfortunate electrical charges, Sparkes has been working on a Super Sprint variant using only one key to control the cars. After much brainstorming with the top brains of naming conventions, he’s called it One Switch Sprint and there’s a beta version on the forum for you to try.

Still on a One Switch tip, the RR2k6 Competition Winner Mr Pug Fugly has been interviewed over at the One Switch Blog about his enormous and much lauded Pyramid.

Enjoy people.
