Been Caught Cruising

September 30, 2006 · Filed Under Retro Remakes News · Comments Off

Good evening ladies and gentlechaps, welcome to my world - it smells of blueberry.

Just a quick heads up to let you know that whilst us judges are off hammering at our word processors with abandon, we’ve dropped a request out there for some of the compo entrants to have a little think back at their own development time and write us a few short pieces on how they think the time went for them. If you fancy having a peek at the results so far, then you can have a gander at them on our fine forums.

And as I don’t appear to be posting much in the way of remakes news myself of late, mainly because aside from reviewing I’m quite busy with a few projects right now… I think its time I threw a little love out there to some recently released stuff myself.

Cruising On Broadway is the essence of simplicity and one of the most addictive games released on the humble Speccy. Which is why I’m incredibly grateful to Sledge for putting out a GBA version so I can play it in the palm of my hand.

Musti and Gigatron have a couple of games released which seem to have got lost amidst the compo madness. So if you fancy playing with their Willy and making yourself Dizzy, you know where to go.

And a quick last one to wrap up from me for the night before we hand back over to our fine new news posters, Tombers Gordian Tomb (confusing huh?) is finished and ready waiting for you to caress your download buttons. Enjoy!

Twisting Your Melon Man!

Love ‘em or loathe ‘em, theres plenty about.

No, Im not referring to that modern day phenomenon that is the BoyBand, but rather, puzzle games. So here’s a few to get the old grey matter sizzling!

At the top of the list we have a couple of Polarium remakes.

The first is a nice little flash game in the form of Polarium by Paul Kamma over at Fuchtelworld, closely followed by a Windows version called StroQ by Luc Vo Van.

Next we have a couple of BeJeweled remakes.

With Halloween only a month away, get yourself in the mood with BeGhouled by Taurus Media. Follow the “Game Designs” link of the left of the web page to find it. Then we have Jools by Paul Pelzl. This is available in both Windows and Linux flavours.

If that lot isnt enough to get your synapses in a twist, there’s Clack by Karl-Wilhelm Haase, a Windows remake of the old Domark block dropper game Klax.

And finally for our Linux based readers we have LMarbles over at LGames, a remake / twist in the Atomix vein.

Enjoy!

New Frontiers…

It’s not often you can say that a game ranks among the greatest of all time without having to read any reviews or polls, and I think you’ll agree that Frontier (Elite II) is right up there.

The GLFrontier project is a port of the Atari ST version rendered using OpenGL. It’s every bit the original game with the added bonus of high resolution rendering and 3D lighting. Very nice indeed!

And as an interesting side note, There is a very nice video of the intro on YouTube. If someone should one day decide to remake the game like that, I’ll have their puppies! See what I mean by clicking HERE

Down the Mine..

Hi folks!

Since I rather stupidly volunteered my services to the Retro Remakes team, Bob has had me working at the rockface of the News Backlog mine buried deep in the bowels of Retro Remakes dot Com.

So here for your gaming pleasure will be the nuggets that I manage to dig up. Nuggets of what, I’ll leave you to decide.

Armed with the rusty pickaxe I stole off TCK, an old miners helmet and a canary in a cage, my first venture into the murky depths revealed a rich vein of remake goodness.

Here we have a couple of Breakout remakes in the form of Purebreaker & Purebreaker 2, a version of Space Invaders called Invaders (funnily enough), and Puckman.

Graphically they look quite nice, but Im not allowed to play them until I finish my shift, so you’ll have to give them a whirl and decide for yourselves.

All these and a few shoot ‘em ups too can be found over at www.bgames.org

And I had better leave it at that for now - the lunch whistle’s just gone off so it’s back to the rockface. You sure this canary is alive Bob?

Lock Up Your Daughters

Yuss, its that time of the year (month) when along comes another of the self proclaimed best in Retro and Indie podcasting unleashes a new bulletin of news and bile in your general direction.

It can only be the one and only, fabulously titled Arsecast in its second episode and dedicated to “Patently wrongfaced opinions of the Retro Remakes competition 2006 and a bit of news and stuff”.

So, if your opinion-o-meter needs some reassuring, your ego massaging or annihilating depending, you can’t go far wrong with a bit of Arsecast.

Enjoy…I think.

2 Dangerous

Have you ever wanted to save the world? Have you ever wanted to battle galactic evil?

Why not play some remakes instead - it’s much safer … umm … except this one is dangerous, Rick Dangerous.

Rick Dangerous II actually…You can find it on Crozza’s site. If you have trouble navigating the site, you can use this link to go straight to his downloads section

Although finished, it is still officially a beta so might not be perfect.
