We did the Mash…
…and it was a graveyard smash!
Sometimes it amazes me the breadth of material that gets remade, its a fantastic testament to the madness and joy that a remaker has. Who’dathunkit that we’d have a Barbie remake ready to grace the list for one thing?
We also have a couple of typing tutors from Giletech. For your typification (a word I’ve just made up) you can find a version of Space Invaders and a version of Breakout to get your fingers ever so nimble on the keyboard. Sadly, no Typing Of The Dead remake to enjoy! Ah well, we can’t have it all.
Seens as we’re still in a bizarre mood how about Monadius, a fabby remake of Gradius with vector graphics, and curiously enough, written in Haskell (the choice of the discerning hacker, I believe). Its a great idea and quite quite playable.
If Space Invaders had been created today given the penchant for bullet hell shooters and abstract graphics, would it perhaps have looked like Nomltest? . Probably not, but its still rather fun seeing a classic being given the bullet hell treatment.
Vectrex Thrust has been around for a fair while now and is widely considered (at least, I consider it) to be a cracking feat of coding and a wonderful game to boot. As well as the source code now being available for those curious as to how you’d go about creating a game for the Vectrex, there’s also a fabulous overlay for maximum Old Skool thrills. Having taken a quick peek at the Emix8 website, I also spied a PacMan remake for Windows for your downloady goodness. Really chaps, if you’ve not seen Vectrex Thrust there’s something wonky in your face and you should remedy it this instant.
Thats enough for tonight I think (unless my wife can’t find something better for me to do) so I’ll leave you to ponder these games before I raid the “to post” archives once more.
You may have also noticed we now link the news posts to our forum, so you’re welcome to drop by and leave a comment on any of the games you read about in our news posts.
We’re bored to death…
…now with the sixties, we never liked the eighties and the seventies were no good at the time…
Or so I heard! Enough of this gibberish and on with the news…
Mervyn J Estcourt. What a fantastic name in the history of spectrum gaming. Author of the fabby Deathchase 3d, perhaps the only game to instill a fear of tree’s upon me. At this point you’re probably expecting a remake of Deathchase 3d to crop up right now, and lo, it was so. Ricardo’s Deathchase is a not entirely faithful remake of Mr Estcourts game remade in Blitz 2d. Its a fair enough game but losing the viewpoint of the original might just be a crime. Go test and judge for yourself.
Ah, the return of Minion was greeted by much rejoicing and throwing of hats in Remakes IRC. Even more so when he declared to a shocked room that he’s going to launch a remake of Atomino in our general direction. Its a game I’ve always found a bit too brain busting for my own liking, preferring mindless blasters as I do - but if cracking little puzzle games are your thang then head on over to Minionsoft and get downloading.
And still on the subject of puzzlers, our very own Caffster has unleashed a Mac version of his match-em-up Take Two using the powers of BlitzMax. People, give the man some support for going where so few tread (into the Mac remake domain). I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again, we’re crying out for more Mac remakes - so if you know of any we’ve not covered or you’re working on one, let us know please - we’d love to cover it and get it listed.
One last quicky before I nip off for a small break before continuing to plunder our news post archives…
Blondie Goes On A Date is a wonderfully twisted parody of the old Commodore 64 game “Barbie” from the brain of Joe Lesko. I really don’t want to spoil too much of this, but its genius in its own little way.
In a cheap motel room…
…the miraculous way you bucked up when I said you were incredibly beautiful!
Or something like that. Its Halloween and we’ve got a grand total of no spooky games for you this year, so you’ll have to make do with some fine and fancy remakes instead.
We’ve got a hecka backlog of news to get through dating back a month or so, so we’re gonna have a determined attempt to blitz a fair bit of it out over the next few days so keep your eyeballs peeled for more news goodness.
First game up dredged up from our vault is the especially fantastic Daves Day Out from Chicken Stu, yes, I know its not a remake by any stretch of the word - but its a fantastic arcade adventure with wonderfully retro sprites which brings back glorious memories of some of the classics and thus more than deserves a mention. It had me hopelessly addicted for a fair while. A job well done and I hope you all get at least a tenth of the enjoyment out of it that I did.
Before I go delving deep into the Remakes Files with some more posts tonight, lets get some fresh stuff out of the way first before I forget about it. Skimpy has blitzed (d’oh!) our forums with a couple of remakes of a few of my favourite games. By popping on over to his site you can grab yerself some most excellent remakes of Qix (which is now known as…*drum roll*…Stix!), the perennial Minter fave Gridrunner (so, who’s going to remake me Matrix then, eh eh?) and a stonking Pengo. Not had a blast on Stix yet, but I have it on good authority that its nowhere near as frustratingly difficult as the brilliant arcade original and still great. Gridrunner is pretty faithful aside from taking away my favourite hidey hole, but I’m just a sucker for GR anyway. As for Pengo, well, its Pengo and no bad thing for it. Go download folks!
Something a bit out of the ordinary for us next, its an Amstrad CPC remake of the classic H.E.R.O by a chappy called Flynn (not our Flynny I fear!). Yep, you read that correctly, its for the Amstrad CPC - a fine computer if ever I saw one. So, grab your emulators and go and play.
Right, I’m off for now to rummage out some more from our news. More posts as the evening progresses.
2005 Competition is go.
For those anxious folks awaiting the news on our competition, you’ll be glad to know that the rules are now available here.
We’re offering the opportunity for you to win an Xbox 360 or a PSP or a DS, a trip to The Retro Ball and the possibility of breaking into the videogames industry with Blitz Games!
So, if you’re a resident of the United Kingdom then what are you waiting for? Competition opens at midnight tonight, the rules are up - and you’ve got just over a month to write something fandabidozey to impress the judges.
If you’re not a resident of the UK, then some of our forum regulars are hosting an “unofficially official” alternative competition in their own time running along similar rules (I’m afraid they don’t have the fancy prizes though) but definitely worth a punt if you fancy the challenge.
This is our last big competition, so we hope you enjoy it (and keep the bitching to a minimum).
I’ll shush now and let you all get on with it.
You Can Never Have Enough
I’m getting into no end of trouble from the RR News Censors for that last post. So here’s a similar one!
If the last news post didn’t satisfy your Turrican fetish, here’s another remake released just recently. Cypherians Systems has been written by Banq-It, so get over to the site and have a shuffty at the latest developments.
And Flynn feels like his Archive Search button is under-used, so type some random stuffage in the box just to humour him, k?
Right, I’m off now before they start attaching the electrodes…
Turrican & Friends
Thanks to Hitm4n for pointing us in the direction of Poke53280. They have released a nifty little video to get all you Turrican fans all flustered and drooling for their upcoming remake. Yep, there’s a Turrican remake coming soon, called Hurrican, and this video lets us in on a nifty little surprise… Cooperative platform shooty action!
