I bet I could reach the alley before you…on yer marks…

To add to the earlier feast of remakey goodness, here’s a little something that has just been handed to me for your enjoyment:

ProgrammerX has a couple of remakes for your downloading pleasure on his little corner of the internets. Rally-X and MegamanZ amongst them.

The links are all higgedly piggeldy and the guy seems to be hosted from a million and one sites - I’ve managed to grab MegamanZ from the page, but no joy with Rally-X myself. So, might be one to keep trying for if you’re desperate for a fix.

And thanks to Dev for the news.

Long time…

Me love you,k.

Welcome back to our irregular regular news batching postness of remaking goodness.

Oh yes, we have some news to fling in your direction, and I’m not afraid to use it. First off the mark is a remake of the Scramble-a-like Super Cobra. Currently in WIP status and using the rather odd combination of numpad 4/6/8/2 and z & x keys for controls, its sloping along nicely. Even though after recent score league events on the RR Forum, I think Scramble is a bit of a swear word at the moment…

More works in progress for you to get down with the hep cats with: Morduun missed the deadline for the RR competition last year, but this hasn’t stopped him progressing apace with his excellent looking remake of Starglider 2. By clicking on that link you’ll be magically transported to a world full of pictures and text, otherwise known as his development blog. Enjoy - its definitely one to look out for.

And still on the subject of people who never quite scraped the competition deadline, Jason M. Hirst or tildeytildetilde as he’s known on forums across the interweb (maybe) is happily blogging away his progress on his c64 remake of Parallax. So, if you’re the reading kind - go and read it or just stare blankly at the page like I do. Great funnage.

And now for something completely different, well - the same really…but not, kinda. Nurse!

Mono is Binary Zoo’s part Asteroids, part Robotron, part Paint Shop Pro game. Offering you two identical styles of gameplay with 3 different levels of difficulty! Fandabidozey. My eyes are still squinty from playing this bizarre hybrid/remake/could be original but not thingy. So, go girlies and check the zoo of Binaryness.

Thats me for tonight, you’ve been a great audience - I’ll see you soon.

Inbox cleared …

This first one will bring a smile to Flynn’s face, amongst others, it’s a remake of Swash Buckler, the Apple ][e classic. Never having owned a computer named after a fruit I am less that qualified to comment on it, suffice to pass on apologies to the author Doug Paterson for forgetting about this one til now.

Cue Star Wars jokes … next up is a game by Chewy Barker, its a remake of Alien Breed 92, the classic 2D shooter by the boys at Team 17. This one passed me by during my Amiga days, as mad as it sounds, but I know it’s loved by many and from the screenies it looks a good un’. May the force be with you Chewy !!

Apparently not so long ago we posted about an online bombjack game that used the Vitalise plugin, well it’s now been repackaged as a downloadable exe and can be grabbed from this website. Gonna check this one myself later as this was one of my all time fave Atari ST conversions.

Why is it when I come to post news I haven’t heard of 80% of the original games ?? Was I really that sheltered in my Youth … pah !! Anyway Knightmare is an old MSX game, being remade by Adriano & Fernando Souza, and not as I first thought a remake of the 3D Ultimate game, or having read it a 2nd time, the old ITV D&D type quiz affair. It appears to be a shootemup in the mode of Ikari or Commando.

I’ve got a site for those that like arcade conversions done in Flash. Check out Zyx’s Retro Flash Studios, the author tells me he already has Astrosmash, Asteroids and Pong for you to try out and plans on doing many more.

That’s my inbox cleared back to the start of the year, however I fear due to work pressures I may have missed out some news mailed during December, if I have missed your news then I apologise, just email it to Hitm4n to post, cos he sits on his arse all day with nothing else to do :)

Oh come with me…

…to Dark Towers…

The rest of this post must be read in the style of Derrick Griffiths, or else the nostalgia level will stoop to zero. You have been warned.

Nils has managed to suck away a few hours of my life into the ether with his rather fandabidozey Flash version of Puzzle Bobble/Bust-a-Move. Its very faithful, but sometimes I enjoy the warm comforts that can bring. He’s contemplating expanding it into multiplayer with a possible 6 players at once, I’d like to suggest the title Bubble-0-7 if he can expand that to 7 players…

Little Eva,Kylie Minogue…what do they have in common? Why, its the Locomotion of course. Amazing Jas has just released a Locomotion clone going by the name of MousePuzzle. Sadly, this is a poor orphaned zip file without a web page for me to show you, but rest assured its well worth a download and I suggest you do it right now if you fancy something that will train your thoughts…(doh!). Yes,that joke would have worked if the game actually featured any trains…but I expect you’ll just ignore after I fix you with my hypno stare.

And talking of orphaned zip files…this ones not really retro, but it is a remake and as the author begged me on his hands and knee’s and promised to wash my shoes every second Tuesday - I agreed to post it. Its also a very nice game which helped his case a great deal. Jerry has foisted this Splinter Cell remake in our stinky faces using the power of 2d. Its gone down very well on the forum, so I hope you enjoy it as much as some of our irregular regulars have.

Finally, in blatant plug corner. Sokurah has been burrowing away on Project:Future. A game that literally stole my childhood from underneath my feet and stored it in a small cassette case never to be returned. You can read his progress on the above website and you can all get the fear to know that I’ll be sprucing up the graphics for him.

Thats all for now, the kettle calls me from afar… more soon.

This issue also includes a great interview with Jeff, as well as an in depth feature on the Atari 2600, reviews of plug and play TV joysticks, as well as all the usual retro news and features.

It’s so hot off the press even the RG website is not updated with the new issue details yet …

Landore from #remakes IRC had a shower and a shave.

But you don’t really want to know about that,do you? So instead, I offer forth some remakes to quell your desires.

The mysterious Chris sent me a few links to some Flash based remaking goodies. The first of which is a most agreeable Bombjack clone. I’ve just wasted a good hour on this before posting, so be warned.

Second from my rummage in Chris’ sack of joy is a Flash remake of the eternal classic Kung Fu Master. Lets face it - we all enjoy repeatedly kicking people through the face once in a while, so go and have a twiddle with it.

Finally from Chris comes Duck Hunt. A game about hunting ducks, believe it or not! Thanks Chris, I’m gonna bag me my tea from that later.

Some great remakes from my bag of Linux stuffage next. Privateer is being remade by some very nice chaps and from the screenshots it looks absolutely glorious. Not only is there a Linux build of this, but there’s also a build for OSX and Win32. So, no-one gets left out of the loop. Dandy.

Super TuxCart is a very respectable Linux based remake of Super Mario Kart. Very polished indeed and I’m sure most of you Linux bods have checked it out already. If not, I demand that you sit in the corner until you’ve explained yourself to me.

I noticed from the flat list that although we’ve got plenty of Boulderdash clones, we have only one for Linux. So lets double that, with DoubleDash. There we go…thats remedied that situation. In case you were wondering, its a multiplayer split screen jobby as well. Lubberly.

As promised, for those folk out there who don’t peruse our forum (why?) here’s a couple of up and coming gems culled from there. Kryten, hot from the success of Rocket Crazy and Universal Hero is not only tinkering with a Scuba Dive remake, but also a very exciting Automata remake. Pi-There is a surreal 3d romp in the style of I,Robot. One I’m most definitely hanging in there for. If its a tenth as good as his Universal Hero remake, I’ll be enchuffed for months.

Loki is beavering away on the Software Projects game Astronut. There’s a few screenshots for you to peruse and latest news in:- there’s gonna be a level editor too. w00tage in excelsis.

Finally, some great news from the Retrospec camp. Whilst still a few months down the line before we’ll see its release, Dr Derek Doctors has posted a very sexy looking pic of Exolon recoded in his much awaited Retrengine. I’m drooling already, and I haven’t even got a pastie tonight!

More remakes news coming up soon…
