Its been a while …

March 29, 2004 · Filed Under Retro Remakes News · Comments Off

Apologies that news has been slow recently but it is mainly due to the uncertainty of the server move and the fact that CS:CZ has been released. If you haven’t bought it then I suggest you do so because it is awesome.

You can get it from Play for just £16.99. A lot of the IRC guys in #remakes have it and play online most evenings.

And I know I am posting news on a new release but it is technically a remake of Counter Strike :)

Now onto proper remake news ….

Fans of the XCOM series of games should check out the cool looking Project Colonisation. XCOM was the ultimate turn based strategy game, and I wasted hours playing back then. The remake looks stunning, and is based more on the initial games in the series which were easily the best.

Next is Tornado, a remake of a C64 game called Weather War. The goal of the game is to destroy the opponent’s house with certain weather phenomenona such as rain, snow, hail, lightning and tornado. It is playable online against a friend as well as against a computer opponent.

A series that passed me by was the Ultima series of games. Here we have a remake of Ultima 4, otherwise known as Quest of the Avatar. Sounds like something Oddbob and STompy do on the forum if you ask me :) Anyway, I digress, the Ultima series of games were RPG style games of the Dungeon Master ilk, but I can tell you little more than that. If only I had the time to devote to games such as these ….

Tetris remakes are “two for a for penny” but

” target=”_blank”>Attrax is pretty neat. Its a circular game, with a centre of gravity or magnetic pull that pulls the pieces to the centre of the grid. Like most Tetris clones it starts off easy but gets harder very quickly. If you enjoy a challenge then you should grab this one now.

Puzzle game fans will want to check out DCastle, a remake of the classic puzzler Star Castle. Sadly it is a Dreamcast only game, but hey I guess even the sadly under-rated Sega console is classed as retro these days.

Spy’s Demise was just the C64 version of Nifty Lifty if you ask me. Basically you must climb the floors of a building, whilst avoiding a series of moving lifts. Accension to the top earns you a valuable secret Russian code. No website to see, just a download.

Finally two quickies of games that have been remade so many times they are hardly worth mentioning …

Space Invaders and Pacman. Not that I am aiming to criticise remakes but there ARE many more games than these to attempt. And many better remakes too :s

More news is in store and will follow shortly …

While we wait …

We do have lots of news stored up for you, but while we prepare it for you I just had to show you this Magnum PI flash movie that Flynn found.

Its very retro and very funny … in fact it has cheered me up as I mourn the non arrival of my copy of CS:CZ :)

Site move suspended

March 24, 2004 · Filed Under Retro Remakes News · Comments Off

It appears that teething problems have put a halt to the server move being undertaken by our hosts. Luckily the server on which this site is hosted has yet to be moved, the unlucky users were on the other servers that have moved and they have all experienced problems of varying degrees.

Therefore the hosts are going to fix all those problems and sit down to try and discover why it went so wrong, when they have this sorted they will restart the moves one rack at a time. At that point the site will definitely go down for a period.

On this basis we have reopened the forum, later this evening I will also post some of the news that has stored up if I get the time.

Sorry for the inconveniences of the last few days, but to have the best possible chance of maintaining the site’s integrity it was neccessary to close everything off. Expect more news as we get it.

Server Move …

March 19, 2004 · Filed Under Retro Remakes News · Comments Off

The server move I mentioned on the 14th is underway.

This means sometime soon the website will go offline for some 48hrs. The forum is now closed until the servers come back online, this is to preserve the integrity of the forum database.

Anyone that hosts with me on the server will also lose the access to their sites for the same period, can I request you do nothing with the sites or the FTP service from now until the service resumes.

Apologies for the downtime but it is beyond our control and in the long run will be a benefit to us.

War theme + bonus

March 18, 2004 · Filed Under Retro Remakes News · Comments Off

First the bonus, as i find it the most interesting ;-)

A very tasty looking WIP remake entitled Tomb Climber can be found right here. Its a remake of Fred and looks kinda special so keep your eyes on the development of this one.

Now, onto the War theme !

First a remake of 1945. V0.06 is downloadable and it seems to be very authentic. Player and enemies are in and much of the graphic work is done. Seems to be lots of level building left to do…

Second we have Dogfight. Check this pages games section for the Dogfight page. Here you will find a download of v1.1a and some great pics of the 3D rendered gfx. The last news was quite a while ago, so development may have stopped. Maybe some of you could email this guy and offer some support for the game ?

Lastly for now is Biplanes. This is a newer version of Maffs older remake but now its in 3D and has improved sound. Check it out !

Expect Downtime …

March 14, 2004 · Filed Under Retro Remakes News · Comments Off

Our hosts, United Hosting, have invested in a series of new Dell Dual Xeon servers which should speed up the site access and downloads - and provide even better uptime than we currently get (which is 2nd to none I would say).

However this does mean that we will have to re-route the domain name to new IP addresses leading to upto 48hrs downtime depending where you are in the world. This is obviously beyond the Remakes.org team’s control.

Normal service will resume as soon as is possible but expect the site to go down in the next couple of days ….
