DBPro Retro Compo

April 27, 2003 · Filed Under Retro Remakes News · Comments Off

As some of you may know there was recently a retro compo in DarkBasic Pro. We have gone though all 95 entries and here are the 5 that have a homepage that we think deserve a mention in the news.

Now this is Missle Command by Paul Apgar at Shiny Brain. You now have to zoom around the landscape in order that you can tri-angulate the missiles destinations and then blow them from the sky, everything is in 3D which leads for a harder game altogether, but no worse for it :)

Another classic to get the 3D makeover, this time it’s Asteroids by Robin Biddlecombe. Everything from the old version is here - the enemy ships, the asteroids to destroy, the inertia and controls. There are even bonus crates to collect which give your ship various power-ups. You can grab this one over at The Games Zone.

Anyone for a game of 3D Sokoban? Well that’s exactly what we have here in the form of Girls From The Block by Dmitiry Korobelnikov at Atomic Destruction Group. GFTB is Dmitriy’s take on this timeless classic, only instead of crates you have girls, cute little anime style girls who will follow your command as you move them into position to complete the level.

Well what have we here? It’s only a 3D version of Double Dragon thats all :) This is by Dienye Boham and is called Retro Fighter and you scroll from left to right across various stages trying to rescue a girl. As you proceed people attack and you generally cause havoc punching, kicking and throwing objects at them. You can grab this one now at Dakison.

How can you have a retro compo without this game, yep it’s JetPac 2003 with a new 3D look. This has been done by the VanSimple Design Team and what an outing it is! This is Jetpac to the max and I’m sure even the Stamper Brothers would agree that VanSimple have done their baby proud.

There really was some quality games in this compo, Hitm4n has put the rest in a thread in the forums HERE, so go take a peak :)

Ohh so much news

Three items of news today (yes that’s right THREE) :)

First up is some more info on the very cool looking 3D version of Chuckie Egg. It looks like the enemies are in now and moving about, yippee :)

There is a site overhaul in the process over at Demonstar and news of them working on their next game, don’t know what it is yet, but it’ll be good.

Now THIS is going to be good, it’s a remake of High Noon in progress and they already have 97% of the code done for it, just needs the graphics and a bit of tweaking. Expect this one soon.

Well that’s your lot for today. More, what do you mean more, OK OK, if you check back tomorrow there just could be some nice remakes to look at ;)

Well here we go, my first news post, strange thing is it’s about a game that i’m doing :)

Nothing to see for this yet (I only decided last night that I was going to do it) but the good news is that Ric Lumb is doing the graphics for it. It’s on the Retrospec site HERE and we should have a mockup for you to see soon.

Hi everyone.

As you can see from the topic, I’m being trialled as a new news member :) First off some of you will already know me as I am also a member of Retrospec (working on Exolon DX atm), then again some of you wont :) Well that’s the introduction out of the way. I would just like to thank The Toker, Hitman and Flynn for this trial and hope I can do it well, so if you have anything to do with remakes that you would like adding to this news page, then send ME or any of the other members an email or a PM in the forum and it will be here in no time.

edit// i just thought i’d add this. News seems quite slow so we are working behind the scenes to make some additions to the site. Enigma is the first acquisition, you’ll have to wait and see for the rest ;-)) hitm4n.

Rare news from my pen ….

Matt Smith has announced the release of Quazatron, his Direct X remake of the 1986 Hewson hit. Originally written by Steve Turner of Graftgold.

Basically Klepto the droid goes around pasting seven bells out of other droids whilst improving his armour. Just had a quick look at this one and it looks lovely. You can grab it from the Retrospec website.

Next up is Blagger, the remake of Alligata’s platformer being coded by Gigatron and Musti. New screen shots have been added. The guys are looking for a musician to help with the sonics, details on their site.

Hands up if you remember the board game Hero Quest. Well it appears a Fenix remake is under way and very early screenshots can be found here - can’t wait to see this one in action personally.

Finally, we have Cats Eye Chaos, a remake of the Rainbow Arts puzzler Logical. Logical is a bizarre puzzle game, where you have to arrange coloured balls to form quartets on the game board.

Well thats it from me. See you next month :)

Well, not quite. Hitm4n here with last minute additions. Kryten has updated his WebPages with a new missile command remake called Defence Command. Looks neat enough. Check it out now !!

For years now I have wanted to write game, well finally I have done it. Some of you know that I have been working on a Space Invaders clone in Dark Basic. Can I present to you Crap Vaders !!

Me and Scottige set each other a challenge to see what sort of code we could come up with to achieve the same aim. I had NEVER programmed a game let alone used Dark Basic.

If you want to check it out then read this forum thread or simply download the game from my website.
